In 1963 the Italian chemist Giulio Natta won the Nobel Prize for discovering how to polymerise propylene creating the basis for a whole plastic industry that has touched all our lives. Based upon the above discovery, P. Breitner, an Italian engineer, revolutionised the roofing and waterproofing industry by developing and perfecting the use of atactic polypropylene (APP) as the wonder additive for bitumen, improving its UV resistance, ageing resistance, thermal –shock resistance, cold weather application flexibility, hot weather application handling, elasticity and resilience, and extending the range of its possible applications in the construction industry. Around the middle of 1970s Asfalti Breitner was created to export this technology to the rest of the world.

Today, BRAI-COST can only be satisfied with the decision, taken at that time, to set forth the path of innovation in the waterproofing. BRAI-COST is one of the few companies capable of developing all the components of the waterproofing technology, because it designs, through its own engineering, the membrane production facilities.
